The Fourth Estate in 2021 obtained data on Ghanaians who had received sponsorship for their education from the Scholarships Secretariat in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic years.

In analysing the data, The Fourth Estate found that there were 972 scholarships funded by the Government of Ghana and that the Scholarships Secretariat disbursed the funds to beneficiaries who studied in countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, Spain, Australia and Russia.

According to the Secretariat, it disbursed GHS237.5 million in 2019 and GHS200 million in 2020.

In the last few days, The Fourth Estate has been publishing series of reports highlighting some grave anomalies in Ghana’s scholarships system where, for example, a good chunk of available funding had gone to people connected to the political and social elite.
