The Fourth Estate in 2021 obtained data on Ghanaians who had received sponsorship for their education from the Scholarships Secretariat in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic years.
In analysing the data, The Fourth Estate found that there were 972 scholarships funded by the Government of Ghana and that the Scholarships Secretariat disbursed the funds to beneficiaries who studied in countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, Spain, Australia and Russia.
According to the Secretariat, it disbursed GHS237.5 million in 2019 and GHS200 million in 2020.
In the last few days, The Fourth Estate has been publishing series of reports highlighting some grave anomalies in Ghana’s scholarships system where, for example, a good chunk of available funding had gone to people connected to the political and social elite.
The Fourth Estate provides below the first part of the list of government of Ghana scholarships beneficiaries for the years 2019 and 2020:

Sincerely this are issues that those who label themselves as respected men of GOD must talk about. The politicians are destroying this country and very soon even the offering will cease. This is really unfair and this will eventually lead to the creation of class society at the expense of those who are not connected to receive scholarship. l am really disappointed in Akuffo Addo and very soon that name will not be respected any longer.
Why would you pay hard currency for courses that are obtainable in our universities here in Ghana. Would you do that if it were your own money?
For a moment , I thought all.the beneficiaries were from from one clan. Then I look closely. As for some typ3s of names, forget it, you won’t get it in there! A God-forsaken country?
One common trend I noticed was that, 96% of the beneficiaries had a full Akan name. I dint think we the Akans have been fair to other ethnic groups because we do not represent 96% of the Ghanaian population. Indeed bearing an Akan name may be that one if your parents is from a different ethnic group, but you can clearly see that the scholarship was skewed towards certain ethnic group. It’s a shame
A fair-minded person. You’re my next president.
Some of the issues raised are debatable. If there are anomalies, when did they start? This has been there for a long time. Most of them are shrouded in secrecy and unless we are told how the awarding scheme operates, we may always be at a loss as to how one can get it. I think the scheme must be attached to our Local Governments and District Councils and it must transparent .
you’ve earned much respect from me
These names are just only southern names 99%.
Does it mean people from upper East and upper west and Northern don’t stand the chance of these scholarships?
Are there not intelligent but needed students in these regions?
Are the beneficiaries not Ghanaians? Of course, today the United States is sponsoring Ukraine with billions of dollars just to kill human beings. We are sponsoring people obtain knowledge that will go a long way to benefit us and we’re making noise.
I’m still wondering how the above beneficiaries are connected to politicians. With the exception of Kemeni Manor, whose background as a broadcaster may have brought her before politicians who else is readily known?
I do agree that one may have to know someone in some office of influence to get a scholarship (as I’ve tried for my sister but failed even though the president had promised scholarships for FSHS students) your work is incomplete as the names above could be ordinary people as well.
Kill Npp/Ndc’s reign they are the cause of all our woes.. we need a new beginning… The 1992 constitution is so flawed… it benefits only those in govt not the citizenry… which parties have been in power since 1992..? I rest my case . Ndc/Npp mutherfuckers..
may I respectfully ask, if they are Akans of party people aren’t they Ghanians. Aba politic has destroyed this country
When I say some ethnic groups are notorious for drawing Ghana back: this is an a example. How, how on earth do you distribute a nations cake as though it is your dad’s willed inheritance. Ah, how?
Good work done, corruption in this country can never end if we keep defending such acts with political lens. First of all, we need to assess the criteria for the selection procedure, and analyse if those awarded really deserve it. We have 16 regions now, how was the scholarship actually distributed? If the rich and the politically connected are those benefitting, then I think we need to go back to our dressing room and rethink about having a fair distributive justice for all.

In need a scholarship
ONE OF THE MOST CORRUPT INSTITUTIONS IN THE COUNTRY.. ALMOST ALL THE SCHOLARSHIPS WENT TO WEALTHY OR WELL TO DO PEOPLE WITH POLITICAL BACKING INSTEAD OF THE POOR
NEPOTISM CRONYISM AND FAVORITISM IN THIS COCKROACH MINDED SATANIC INSTITUTION..
THEY SECRETARIAT SHOULD BE DISSOLVED
BECAUSE IT IS USED BY THE POLITICAL POWERS TO LOOT THE COUNTRY..
This is really sad
I need scholarship please help me
No fairness in this country, the poor world continue to be poor until the end
Even if can not say it’s politically motivated but I can tell, it is religiously, ethnically motivated. Abah leaders at least there is here after
Nothing pains my heart if these beneficiaries will utilize these scholarship to study something new to impart to this nation. But they will come back empty after their study only to be appointed unto leadership positions with tax exemptions to be served by the ordinary Ghanaian again to continue the looting and corrupt legacies left behind for them.
Beneficiaries, be advised!
Akufo Addo, Enough is enough!
I’m not surprise, …
